This isn’t specifically sports related but I follow a lot of Spanish motorsports professionals like Marc Marquez and they seem to have prawns or oysters a lot and I was wondering if seafood is a big thing in Spain or if it depends on what region you grew up in or maybe total personal preference. Also what are some all time favourite Spanish dishes or the most popular ones?
Hiii, anon! Seafood is absolutely a big thing in Spain, especially in coastal areas (which is a significant part of the country, bear in mind that Spain takes up most of the Iberian peninsula; so all sides of the country open up to either the Mediterranean, the Cantabrian sea, or the Atlantic ocean save for the corner where we border Portugal and the small border with Andorra/France). Also, this got long, so please check under the cut for a very detailed explanation of Spanish eating habits! (I got carried away 😂)
Fish and seafood are also a main component of the so-called “Mediterranean diet”! The following graphic is a good summary of how food intake is structured in Spain, and I can confirm that most middle-class and up people in the country do indeed stick to it (though it’s true that the crisis and increased poverty due to the recession have started shifting our food habits, but that’s a discussion for another day). This charter is exactly how I grew up eating at home as a kid, and how I still feed myself now that I live on the other side of Europe (old habits die hard!). Fun fact, we also had these types of charts drilled into us in school lmao, to “learn to feed ourselves properly”:
The general rule of thumb is to have at least 5 pieces of vegetables/fruits across all meals of the day, fish at least twice a week, poultry meats once a week, and red meats only a couple of times a month. But specific parts of the countty, notably the center planes and the Cantabrian region, follow slightly modified versions of this with higher red meat intake, due to the fact that cattle farming is a significant component of their regional economy. They also just have really good quality red meat, I always end up eating more red meat when I’m up north in Asturias visiting my family than I do normally hehe.
As to popular dishes, tough question! There’s too many of them and they vary from region to region haha. But some staples that are well-known across the entire country are potato omelet (the Vasque make really good ones), gazpacho (of Andalusian origin, the best, most refreshing thing to drink when it’s 45 celsius outside), paella (Valencian, do NOT make it with seafood. Authentic Valencian paella is made only with game meat, usually rabbit), and then we have good hearty stews like cocido (most popular variant is the Madrid one) and pote/fabada (from Asturias). Fish is eaten wide and far, but most of the time is cooked very minimally (just pop it in the oven with a drizzle of olive oil and some vegetables to roast).
#this got away from me but hey if anyone needed details on the Spanish diet for a fic#here you go 😂#fun fact I was talking to a Dutch friend the other day about the process of going vegan and literally the first thing I said#was ‘I could probably quit meat without trouble; I eat very little anyways; but I could never stop eating fish’#literally whenever I go back to Spain to see my parents and my mum asks me what I want to eat the answer is always potato omelet and fish 😂#a talks#ask

The 2-Day a Week Diet Can Help You Lose Stubborn Weight
The 2-Day a Week Diet Can Help You Lose Stubborn Weight
What is the 2-Day Diet? In a world full of complicated diets with ultra-specific restrictions, the 2-Day Diet is surprisingly easy to understand and follow. It involves two basic rules: You eat a low-carb and high-protein diet two days per week, and then you follow the classic Mediterranean diet — rich in fruits, vegetables, fish, and whole grains — for the other five days. With your doctor’s OK, you could potentially get major benefits from following this To get more news about 2 day diet japan, you can visit herbal-hall.com official website.healthy eating plan. Research has shown that a low-carb and high-protein diet can be beneficial for weight loss. Furthermore, there’s tons of evidence that a Mediterranean diet can help fend off serious health issues such as heart disease. Combining two clinically-backed eating plans certainly sounds like a good idea, but this begs the question: Why those two diets specifically?
According to The 2-Day Diet (Amazon, $15) co-author Michelle Harvie, PhD, this eating plan is designed to be naturally low enough in calories to help you lose weight without making you feel hungry — and also easy enough to fit into a busy lifestyle. Furthermore, she claims the two days of dieting can actually retrain your eating habits on the days you aren’t dieting so that the weight not only comes off, but also stays off. (No binge-eating here!) While the 2-Day Diet can be thought of as an intermittent diet, don’t mistake it for intermittent fasting, which involves going several hours per day without food.
“You don’t have to fast,” Dr. Harvie writes on The 2-Day Diet website. “In fact, the diet’s designed to help you stay full — it’s easier to stick with it because you don’t feel hungry. It’s nutritionally balanced and there’s no calorie counting, so it’s easy to do, and there’s loads of choice, so you won’t get bored.” How to Do the 2-Day Diet Right Harvie and fellow co-author Tony Howell, BSc, recommend that you follow the two days of dieting in a row, as they report many 2-Day dieters find it easier to get in the habit of doing the more restrictive eating consecutively. But if you’re concerned about the 2-Day Diet fitting in with your packed schedule, keep in mind that the book has a variety of different meal plans that you can adapt to fit your specific lifestyle — including your big upcoming events and important occasions.
If you’re so busy that you don’t have the time to read every last detail about the 2-Day Diet, you might consider purchasing the condensed version, The 2-Day Diet: The Quick & Easy Edition ($16.87, Amazon), instead. That way, you can cut to the chase about the most crucial aspects of the plan without trying to figure out which of its features are the most relevant to you.
Then, you just need to find some tasty 2-Day Diet recipes. The easiest way to do this is by checking out The 2-Day Diet Cookbook ($9, Amazon), which includes 65 delicious recipes for every day of the week. For example, for the first two days, you might eat meals such as blackberry frozen yogurt for breakfast and Thai beef salad for dinner. On the other five days of the week, heart-healthy salmon and veggies and snacks of nuts and fruits might be right up your alley. From breakfast to dinner, you can find loads of ideas for your dieting days and your non-dieting days. Who knows? Maybe you’ll even get inspired to create a 2-Day Diet recipe all your own!

Oh those achy joints
Oh, those achy joints https://healthbeat.corewellhealth.org/oh-those-achy-joints-arthritis-sports-medicine/ The best treatment for arthritis? Low-impact exercises such as biking, swimming, weightlifting and walking. (For Corewell Health Beat) Ever feel like those aching knees and joints can predict a change in the weather? Maybe. But don’t expect an in-depth report like you’d get on the 6 o’clock news. Technically, when the barometric pressure drops, it can affect the lubricating fluid in your joints, said Matt Axtman, DO, a sports medicine specialist with Corewell Health’s Medical Group Orthopedics. But that’s pretty much where the weather tie-in ends. To truly understand arthritis and how it affects the body, you need to examine exactly what it is, Dr. Axtman said. Quite simply, it’s a wearing down of the cartilage or protective covering around the joints. “The cartilage covering your joints is like the tire treads on your car,” Dr. Axtman said. “Arthritis is a wearing down of that covering. As that protective covering decreases in thickness or is less smooth, it causes inflammation in the joints. This can then lead to pain and discomfort.” The good news is, there are ways to help alleviate the pain—or even delay the onset of the condition. The young, the old While arthritis is more common in later years, it’s a mistake to think it only affects older adults. “Arthritis can affect individuals of any age, depending upon their weight, genetics or an injury,” Dr. Axtman said. “But the majority of the time, it affects older people.” It’s sometimes genetic, affecting people who have a family history of the condition. An injury can also lead to arthritis, even if the injury happened 20 or more years ago. Being overweight can also increase the likelihood of developing this condition. There is a distinct difference between osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, Dr. Axtman said. Osteoarthritis, the wearing down of joint cartilage, usually occurs over time. Rheumatoid arthritis, meanwhile, involves the body attacking the joints. The body perceives the joints as something foreign and attacks them, causing inflammation and pain, Dr. Axtman said. That can happen at any age and it’s often genetic. Keep on moving The best arthritis treatment? Low-impact exercises such as biking, swimming, weightlifting and walking. “Those are the mainstays to deal with arthritis,” Dr. Axtman said. Anti-inflammatory medication such as acetaminophen can help. A physician can also provide an injection, such as a steroid or lubricating shot. A knee brace may help improve things for achy knees, but for arthritis in the shoulders there is no great option for a brace. Using ice or heat may help fight symptoms, although there’s no hard-and-fast rule on which method to use. It’s a matter of personal choice. Physical therapy—even for a short period—can help maintain joint range of motion and strength, Dr. Axtman said. It’s also a good opportunity to learn exercises that can be performed year-round. And while there’s no way to completely avoid arthritis if you’re already prone, certain precautions may help delay the onset. For starters, it’s important to maintain a healthy weight and follow a proper diet, Dr. Axtman said. Diet plays a sizable role in your body’s inflammatory responses. The Mediterranean diet, which is rich in healthy fats, carotenoids, flavonoids and spices and herbs, is proven to help fight inflammation. Regular exercise can help maintain healthy muscle structure around every joint. Any type of movement will help the body’s natural fluids lubricate the joints. “Exercise will be beneficial in trying to prevent arthritis from developing, but it doesn’t matter what you do—even the strongest athletes can eventually suffer from arthritis,” Dr. Axtman said. Hi! I’ve been really enjoying your writing recently, especially your head canons. I think you really get the essence of the characters very well. This may be a weird request (and you can tell me if so!) but I was wondering what the main Assassins (if possibly also the Templars like Shay and Haytham) would react to a Latina/Hispanic reader. I’m Hispanic myself, and I’ve found no content that fits specifically to me; I always tell myself to just write the head cannons or fanfic myself, but I feel too shy honestly, and you’d do a far better job of it than I would!
Maybe the reader fits a lot of the stereotypes (kinda like I do) – likes dancing, cooking, likes speaking a lot of Spanish all the time, is somewhat social, very feminine, etc. I wonder what the different characters would genuinely think of this personality at first meeting, or maybe in their relationship?
Again, if you don’t feel comfortable with it, that’s cool! I still love your head canons!
notes: It's not a weird request at all and I'm so happy to know that you enjoy my writing and like my characterisations! And omg never be shy about sharing your writing! I'm sure it would be amazing!
This is my first time writing a Hispanic/Latina reader (I've mostly focused on the Hispanic aspect just for you!) so I'd love feedback and/or constructive criticism! Making my readers feel represented is very important to me and I'd like to make sure that I can give you good rep! I've tried to follow your request of the reader fitting a lot of the stereotypes listed and I hope that I've done so in a respectful way!
characters: Altaïr, Ezio, Edward, Haytham, Shay, Connor, Arno, Jacob
☾ ⋆゚ MASTERLIST / RULES / TAGLIST FORM
a l t a ï r :
As much as he's not really a social butterfly, he couldn't help but feel drawn to you before he even knew you all that well
He chalks it down to a feminine charm that you have (and your amazing and generous cooking! Though, I think it might take a bit of convincing to get him to dance with you lol)
He's very interested in your culture and shows a lot of interest on picking up Spanish seeing as you tend to speak it a lot (I can imagine he was interested in learning languages seeing as he likely spoke Arabic and Greek and probably spoke to Richard Lionheart in French) - he'll try and join you in speaking as he's going along the learning process!
I can see him as being interested to learn how to make the dishes you cook too! I think the two of you could have quite a few date nights where you both prepare dinner together of typical dishes from each other's cultures, having a little private dance around the kitchen with just the two of you with some music in the background as you teach each other the recipes.
e z i o :
I headcanon that Ezio speaks Spanish pretty well (whether fluently or not, I don't really have enough to go on) because of his communications with Maria and Aguilar as shown in AC Rebellion so he loves hearing you speak Spanish as it gives him a chance to test his skills when he speaks with you!
As a couple, you both take turns cooking and so your diets will be a mix of Mediterranean and Latin American cuisine
Being from an upper-class family, he would have head to learn courtly dances so I can 100% see Ezio as a dancer and he just loves to dance with you! You don't even need music, just a beat or a hummed melody and the two of you are dancing with each other!
I see Ezio as a very physically affectionate man and I can picture him just loving be be all cuddled up with you, maybe with you laying on his chest, while he asks you all about your home and listens with keen interest while you talk (I think he'll try and get these conversations going in Spanish too because he loves hearing you speak in it and it's a good chance for him to work on his language skills)
e d w a r d :
Edward might be Welsh but he's no stranger to this part of the world so (depending on what part of Latin America you're from) there's a chance he's experienced a bit of your culture!
He probably knows a handful of words and phrases in Spanish (just based off Spanish presence in the Caribbean in canon) but he can get a little lost when you speak it often. Does he make an effort to stop you? Absolutely not, he adores hearing you speak Spanish. Does he make an effort to learn it too? He does his best
Edward's very outgoing, no stranger to nights out and we see he likes music too so he strikes me as a dancer! Hen could dance entire nights away with you and honestly it's one of his favourite pastimes! He loves spending time with you and the way you smile as you dance is so beautiful to him, he just can't get enough!
Edward's travelled quite a bit so he loves to tell his own stories and hear other people's stories of where they've been and what they've seen so he's very eager to hear all about where you're from!
h a y t h a m :
Canonically, Haytham's fluent in Spanish (AC Forsaken) so the two of you can just weave between Spanish and English and he's not bothered in the slightest (in fact, he quite enjoys it!)
Being upper-class (and English where food in culture isn't really a big deal) I can't really picture Haytham as ever learning to cook for himself (despite a few very basic things) so please teach him how to cook the way you do because he loves everything you make!
And I can see him as the sort to try and surprise you with a romantic dinner where he's cooked all your favourites for you that you've taught him!
Haytham strikes me as the sort who studies things like History in his free time and I can see him taking up an interest in learning all about the history of your country and how things have caused your culture to develop! But, as much as he enjoys research, he likes laying down with you after a long day and just listening to your voice and it's nice to hear you excitedly talk about your home.
s h a y :
Another one who, like Edward, has travelled a bit and loves to both tell and hear stories, he wants to hear all about where you're from and what it's like for you there!
Shay isn't very familiar with Spanish (unlike French and Portuguese) but he'll make an effort to learn if you're Spanish-speaking! He's had to do it for wherever he travels to anyway so it's really nothing new for him. And if you speak Brazilian Portuguese, he'll make an effort to learn more of your language with the European Portuguese he knows as a foundation.
I can picture him as a a shy dancer but he can be convinced with some help from you! He's utterly enamoured with you and he finds you so charming that he just can't resist when you invite him to dance with you!
He enjoys your cooking and I see Shay as the sort of man who likes to cook for his partner often so he's keen to learn how to make your favourite dishes from you!
c o n n o r :
He's so quiet and reserved that you truly are a ray of sunshine for him with your sociable ways and it's honestly what draws him to you!
Like Altaïr, I can see his as a very reluctant dancer but with a lot of convincing (and when it's just the two of you) I can see him giving in and dancing with you, breaking out of his shell some and enjoying himself with you!
I'm pretty sure Connor only spoke a Native dialect and English but he likes to hear you speak Spanish a lot. He could honestly just sit with you and listen to you talk for hours, even if he can't understand you, because he just loves to watch the emotions play across your face and he'll just become lost in thoughts of how much he loves you.
He likes that you're quite sociable too because it means you can do a lot of the talking for him lol so in public he tends to follow your lead in social situations while he sticks close to your side.
a r n o :
Arno's big on the arts so if you can tell him about it, he'll love to hear all about the artists, writers, poets and music from your home country (even if he has to rely on translations)
Like Haytham, being upper-class, I can imagine it was never really important for him to learn how to cook for himself (running the café, he's learned how to bake but cooking still isn't much of a strong point) so the two of you have a sort of dynamic where you make the dinners and he makes the desserts!
He sort of treats it like a date and the two of you will be giggling and dancing around the kitchen together as you go about sorting everything out (but Arno is a very physically affectionate man and there have been instances where food has burned because he just couldn't let go of you or stop smothering you in kisses hehe)
He'll learn how to play some of your favourite songs in your mother tongue on the piano so that he can play while he hears you sing in your own language, regardless of your skill, he finds it romantic and he wants to surprise you by learning your favourite songs for you to sing along to!
j a c o b :
Thank the gods you can cook because he can't to save his life (Evie is so thankful for your skill in cooking because she no longer has to worry about Jacob burning the hideout down whenever he wants something to eat)
He does his best to learn little bits of Spanish for you and the first thing he went for was sweet nicknames for you to try and surprise you!
Like Edward, he's very outgoing and no stranger to night life so I think he could dance the night away with you. Oftentimes, he'll be hugging you, swaying you in his arms, and then he's humming a melody and the two of you are just dancing around the place together, he loves to be close to you and see the smile on your face!
I'm pretty sure it was mentioned that Jacob had never left Crawley before going to London (correct me if I'm wrong) so he could listen to you talk about where you're from forever. He laps up every single detail and asks lots of questions and he's set on going there with you one day. It's something that he often brings up because his world is just so small and yours seems so much bigger and different and he'd just love to see it with you one day!

How to Research Ancient People
There are numerous ways to research ancient people. For example, you could look up the names of famous древние люди and their civilizations. You could also look up the occupations of each of those peoples. But, if you are unsure of the differences between them, you may want to start a new category called "Ancient People".
For example, ancient Polynesians learned to use the stars to navigate and colonize distant islands, while the Egyptians tracked the rising and setting times of the stars using the Nile. Some ancient European megalithic sites were also aligned to the solstices and equinoxes, and date to Neolithic societies. Stonehenge and Newgrange in Ireland and England were both built before writing was invented. But they were already ancient when the pyramids were built.
There is no definitive proof that ancient people consumed green vegetables, but evidence of a vast amount of grains has been uncovered. Archaeobotanists have been looking for the remains of green foods like leafy greens, berries, and grains. The search for these traces has led to discoveries of ancient cereals and grains, but there are also a range of uncooked plant remains. While the archaeological record is rich in information about ancient people, green leaves and vegetables are the missing link in understanding their diet.
In many cultures, there is no concrete evidence for long life, but relics of ancient people are evidence of long lives. Ancient Egyptians wrote verses about the disintegration of old age. Greeks classified old age among divine curses, but ancient tombstones testify to the fact that many people lived well beyond 80 years of age. Various ancient figurines and artworks portray elderly individuals. But what we really know about the life span of ancient people is their longevity.
Ancient people are also known by their names. Among these are the Greeks, the Achaeans, and the Greeks. They also lived on the Mediterranean coast, and their cultures are believed to have been influenced by these people. There are also countless names for ancient people that have been lost to time. The ancient people of this region are primarily influenced by the peoples of the Mediterranean area. The ancient people of the Mediterranean region shaped our modern world.
The Greeks, on the other hand, made the first attempt to understand the cosmos. They conceived the world as a spinning disc surrounded by the great mythical river Oceanus. In the process, they also developed complex systems of observation of the universe, which eventually led to the development of astronomy and science. They used this knowledge to improve their lives. It is possible that these civilizations were influenced by ancient people who thought about cosmology and the cosmos, as well as by the theories that emerged from them.
While ancient people did not have a written language, they did have a strong influence on it. They were influential in the political and religious life of the Meroitic people. For example, the queen of Kush, Amanirenas, ruled Kush from forty thousand to ten thousand years ago. The queen was a powerful leader in Meroitic politics, and her art and architecture are still recognizable today. There is no better time to explore ancient Egypt.

Thinking about how all the old Christian fasting traditions correspond to the environment where that kind of fasting would be most beneficial to the community/would be considered most ethical. It overlaps with community dietary restrictions like kosher/halal/word of wisdom, which if you think about it, all address material issues specific to those communities--like a warm climate and food spoilage, too many people worshipping idols, and intoxicants like tobacco/coffee/alcohol causing community strife.
So like, Christianity first gets started among the cultural mix shared by Hellenistic Jews and Gentile god-fearers, right? And one of the first things they do is to decide that the old "no unclean animals" rule isn't useful to their community. They live in a world where trade is fast, business is booming, and there's lots of water. Fewer people are dying from eating spoiled pork. Shellfish are cheap in the coastal Mediterranean. You know?
But they spread out and start making rules about what they SHOULD stop eating, and when. Meat is expensive and wasteful a lot of the time. Let's save it for spring and summer, for when we have all these baby lambs. Wine and oil are import goods--let's try and stick to what we have locally. Butter and eggs are quite precious and spoil easily, so let's try to save them over the winter, just in case.
And then a bunch of Northern European barbarians are like "listen, fuck you, it's cold here and we can't survive on your dainty 'herbs and bread for half the year' diet. Stop making us do stuff that's not in the Bible." And then Rome says "fine, whatever, can you at least try to not eat red meat on Fridays?"
Christianity comes to America. After the last few centuries of wars and upheaval involving religion, we're suspicious of religions with a lot of rules. We have this vague idea that we should "give something up for Lent." Some weird frontier cult decides to stop drinking coffee, of all things. The Temperance people might be onto something, though.
So western Christianity has kind of lost one of its most powerful tools, IMO: a sense of shared food habits which are rooted in community ethics around work, humility, practicality, and sacrifice
#i have read zero actual scholarship about this but hmu if you know of any#i DID have an edible in the salt lake airport#which is where i started thinking about this

What are the best ways to lose weight for beginners in 2022?
Scientists say these nutrition plans have enough evidence to believe they work in the long-term.
1 Mediterranean Diet
Based on the heart-healthy lifestyle of Greece, Italy, Spain, and Portugal, Mediterranean-style diets include healthy fats such as avocados, olive oil, nuts, and fish at least twice a week, plenty of beans, fruit, leafy greens, and whole grains, and even a daily glass of red wine. You can eat cheese in moderation, but limit the red meat to once or twice a week.
2 DASH Diet
The low-sodium Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) Diet was designed as a way to help people control their blood pressure without using drugs, though a few books have used it as a basis for a weight-loss diet. DASH emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat or nonfat dairy and limits saturated fat and dietary cholesterol.
How it works for weight loss: You will certainly improve your health with this diet, and if you restrict calories while following DASH’s heart-healthy rules, you can lose weight and lower your blood pressure. A recent study found of obese older adults found that those who followed the DASH diet lost weight and decreased body fat, along with many other health benefits. "DASH is one of my favorite diets," says Meridan Zerner, R.D., a dietitian at the Cooper Clinic in Dallas. "You're getting the anti-inflammatory, high fiber, heart-healthy benefits, and if you use a personalized, calorie-limited plan, you can absolutely lose weight."
3 WW (formerly Weight Watchers)
Formerly known as Weight Watchers, this diet company has been around so long, your Grandma probably tried it when she was trying to take off the baby weight. With the newest version, myWW+, you get sorted into a color-coded program that assigns you a certain number of points per day (foods are given points based on calories, saturated fat, sugar, and protein)—you can eat whatever you want within that range. You can also eat an unlimited amount of 0-point foods (most fruits and veggies and lean proteins such as fish, tofu, beans, eggs, and chicken breast fall into this category).
4 Vegan Diet
Going a step further than the traditional vegetarian diet, vegans shun all animal products, including dairy, eggs, and honey. While many choose this lifestyle for ethical or environmental reasons, some people look to the vegan diet for weight loss as well. And with the new era of plant-based meats, going vegan is easier than ever.
How it works for weight loss: Just going vegan won’t necessary help you drop the weight. After all, candy, pasta, and potato chips can all fall under the vegan label without being particularly healthy or low-cal. "If you eat high-quality vegan food, like leafy greens and plant-based proteins, you can lose more weight than either vegetarians or omnivores," says Beaver; studies confirm that those on a plant-based diet have a lower average BMI than those who eat animal products. A 2020 Australian study came to the interesting conclusion that vegans and vegetarians are more likely to stick with the diet over the long run than those on plans such as paleo, because they were motivated by ethical and moral beliefs rather than just weight-loss.
5 Flexitarian Diet
Whereas the vegan diet goes one step beyond vegetarianism, the Flexitarian diet takes it one step back, explains Dawn Jackson Blatner, R.D., nutritionist and author of The Flexitarian Diet. "This is a very pro-plant diet, but it gives you the flexibility to have a hot dog at a ballpark, or to eat some turkey at Thanksgiving," she says. There are no strict calorie limitations, though Blatner's book provides a 5-week plan that provides around 1,500 calories a day.
How it works for weight loss: By filling your plate with more vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and plant proteins, and sticking with the low-cal plan, you can lose weight and improve your health. A recent review found that people who followed a flexitarian diet had lower BMIs and lower rates of metabolic syndrome than people who regularly ate meat.

I am watching Jamie Oliver's Superfoods. As a general rule I think he is a good cook with good intentions, and he does some good stuff.
But, and this goes for a lot of chefs, he is removed from the food reality if a lot of people.
The Superfoods series is more than a few years old now I think, so the fad it is based on is a bit dated. The idea that certain cultures in the world have got their food lives sorted out and it makes them healthier and they live longer. It's where ideas like the Mediterranean diet comes from. "These people live long and healthy lives so they must have it sorted out"
On this episode Jamie goes out to Greece and meets some people on a Greek island and they all go out together and pick wild herbs and greens and come home and make some nice food out of it. Then he shows us, the audience, how to make a kebab inspired by what he learned there.
I'm sitting here thinking, well, it you're getting regular exercise climbing over mountain sides for various things, and you live in a culture where this is normal, even if it's just your family that does it, and you have the experience and knowledge from that culture of being able to identify editable plants and herbs from the ones who aren't, and the knowledge of how to prepare them, then I think it's more than the food they are eating that is contributing to their health. This was filmed in Spring too, when there was lots of greens around. So it's not too hot yet. You live in a place with sun, and a support network, and you're doing regular exercise, you know how to cook, and you can sleep in the hottest part of the day, and you don't have to work cause someone else on the support network is providing so all you have to do is worry about what dinner will be. Like, it's a lovely life they are leading but the food is not the most important aspect to what is giving them life here.
And it's the same all over. These shows about other cultures take you to the best example to prove their case in cultures far removed from your own, where the food is always good, and fresh, and nobody has a day job, and there's 10 women in the kitchen and when the baby cries it's not just you dealing with it, and if you are tired or under the weather there's 9 other people to fill in.
Yeah, I'd live a long and healthy life too.
And yes the food is good. But when you have 3 generations of experience around the cooking pot it was always going to be fit for purpose.
Idk. These places just always seem to have everything else figured out before the food even enters the picture. Nobody on these shows has to battle tools and newspapers in their kitchen before they get out a pan.

Casu marzu: The world's 'most dangerous' cheese
The Italian island of Sardinia sits in the middle of the Tyrrhenian Sea, gazing at Italy from a distance. Surrounded by a 1,849-kilometer coastline of white sandy beaches and emerald waters, the island's inland landscape rapidly rises to form hills and impervious mountains.
And it is within these edgy curves that shepherds produce casu marzu, a maggot-infested cheese that, in 2009, the Guinness World Record proclaimed the world's most dangerous cheese.
Cheese skipper flies, Piophila casei, lay their eggs in cracks that form in cheese, usually fiore sardo, the island's salty pecorino.
Maggots hatch, making their way through the paste, digesting proteins in the process, and transforming the product into a soft creamy cheese.
Then the cheesemonger cracks open the top -- which is almost untouched by maggots -- to scoop out a spoonful of the creamy delicacy.
It's not a moment for the faint-hearted. At this point, the grubs inside begin to writhe frantically.
Some locals spin the cheese through a centrifuge to merge the maggots with the cheese. Others like it au naturel. They open their mouths and eat everything.
If you are able to overcome the understandable disgust, marzu has a flavor that is intense with reminders of the Mediterranean pastures and spicy with an aftertaste that stays for hours.
Some say it's an aphrodisiac. Others say that it could be dangerous for human health as maggots could survive the bite and and create myiasis, micro-perforations in the intestine, but so far, no such case has been linked to casu marzu.
The cheese is banned from commercial sale, but Sardinians have been eating it, jumping grubs included, for centuries.
"The maggot infestation is the spell and delight of this cheese," says Paolo Solinas, a 29-year-old Sardinian gastronome.
He says some Sardinians cringe at the thought of casu marzu, but others raised on a lifetime of salty pecorino unabashedly love its strong flavors.
"Some shepherds see the cheese as a unique personal pleasure, something that just a few elects can try," Solinas adds.
When tourists visit Sardinia, they usually wind up in a restaurant that serves porceddu sardo, a slowly roasted suckling piglet, visit bakers who sell pane carasau, a traditional paper-thin flatbread, and meet shepherds who produce fiore sardo, the island pecorino cheese.
Yet, if you are adventurous enough, it's possible to find the casu marzu. It shouldn't be seen as a weird attraction, but a product that keeps alive an ancient tradition and hints at what the future of food might look like.
Giovanni Fancello, a 77-year-old Sardinian journalist and gastronome, spent his life researching local food history. He's traced it back to a time when Sardinia was a province of the Roman empire.
"Latin was our language, and it's in our dialect that we find traces of our archaic cuisine," Fancello says.
There is no written record of Sardinian recipes until 1909, according to Fancello. That's when Vittorio Agnetti, a doctor from mainland Modena, traveled to Sardinia and compiled six recipes in a book called "La nuova cucina delle specialità regionali."
"But we have always eaten worms," says Fancello. "Pliny the Elder and Aristotle talked about it."
Ten other Italian regions have their variant of maggot-infested cheese, but while the products elsewhere are regarded as one-offs, casu marzu is intrinsically part of Sardinian food culture.
The cheese has several different names, such as casu becciu, casu fattittu, hasu muhidu, formaggio marcio. Each sub-region of the island has its own way of producing it using different kinds of milk.
Foodies inspired by the exploits of chefs such as Gordon Ramsay often come in search of the cheese, says Fancello. "They ask us: 'How do you make casu marzu?' It's part of our history. We are the sons of this food. It's the result of chance, of magic and supernatural events."
Fancello grew up in the town of Thiesi with his father Sebastiano, who was a shepherd who made casu marzu. Facello shepherded his family's sheep to grazing grounds around rural Monte Ruju, lost in the clouds, where magic was believed to happen.
He recalls that, for his father, casu marzu was a divine gift. If his cheeses didn't become infested with maggots, he would be desperate. Some of the cheese he produced stayed for the family, others went to friends or people who asked for it.
Casu Marzu is typically produced at the end of June when local sheep milk begins to change as the animals enter their reproductive time and the grass dries from the summer heat.
If a warm sirocco wind blows on the cheesemaking day, the cheese-transforming magic works even harder. Fancello says it's because the cheese has a weaker structure, making the fly's job easier.
After three months, the delicacy is ready.
Mario Murrocu, 66, keeps casu marzu traditions alive at his farm, Agriturismo Sa Mandra, near Alghero in the north of Sardinia. He also keeps 300 sheep and hosts guests in his trattoria, and keeps casu marzu traditions alive.
"You know when a form will become casu marzu," he says. "You see it from the unusual spongy texture of the paste," Murrocu says.
Nowadays, this isn't so much down to luck as the ideal conditions that cheesemongers now use to ensure as many casu marzu as possible. They've also figured out a way to use glass jars to conserve the cheese, which traditionally never lasted beyond September, for years.
Though revered, the cheese's legal status is a gray area.
Casu marzu is registered as a traditional product of Sardinia and therefore is locally protected. Still, it has been deemed illegal by the Italian government since 1962 due to laws that prohibit the consumption of food infected by parasites.
Those who sell the cheese can face high fines up to €50,000 (about $60,000) but Sardinians laugh when asked about the prohibition of their beloved cheese.
In the past few years, the European Union has begun to study and revive the notion of eating grubs thanks to the concept of novel food, where insects are raised to be consumed.
Research shows that their consumption could help reduce carbon dioxide emissions associated with animal farming and help alleviate the climate crisis.
Roberto Flore, the Sardinian head of Skylab FoodLab, the food system change laboratory of the Technical University of Denmark's innovation hub, has long studied the concept of insect consumption.
For a few years, he led the Nordic Food Lab research and development team -- part of the three-Michelin-starred NOMA restaurant -- trying to figure out ways to insert insects into our diet.
"Lots of cultures associate the insect with an ingredient," Flore says. That said, Sardinians prefer the cheese to the maggot and are often horrified by the idea that people eat scorpions or crickets in Thailand.
Flore says he's traveled around the world to study how different cultures approach insects as food and believes that while psychological barriers make it difficult to radically alter eating habits, such consumption is widespread.
"How do you define edible food?" he says ."Every region of the world has a different way to eat insects."
He's convinced that Sardinia's delicacy is safe to eat.
"I believe that nobody has ever died eating casu marzu. If they did, maybe they were drunk. You know, when you eat it, you also drink lots of wine."
Flore hopes casu marzu will soon shed its clandestine status and become a symbol of Sardinia -- not because of its unusual production, but because it's emblematic of other foods now vanishing because they don't fit in with modern mainstream tastes.
In 2005, researchers from Sardinia's Sassari University made the first step in this direction: they raised flies in the lab and made them infect pecorino cheese to show that the process can happen in a controlled way.
Islanders and researchers hope that the European Union will soon rule in their favor. Until then, anyone who wants to sample it will need to ask around when they get to Sardinia.
For those willing to suspend concerns about what they're eating, it offers an authentic experience recalling a time when nothing was thrown away and when boundaries of what was edible or not were less well defined.
Cheesemonger Murrocu says that, fittingly, locals keep an open mind about the best way to eat casu marzu, but a few other regional treats have been known to help it slip down easier.
"We spread the cheese on wet pane carasau, and we eat it," he says. "But you can eat it as you want, as long as there is some formaggio marcio and a good cannonau wine."
By Agostino Petroni.
